The Case for the Defence

What a pleasure it was to watch the defenders working with the rest of the team to get the ball back and stopping the other team from scoring. Chris Snaith saved a penalty in our last match of the season to keep a clean sheet against Yorkshire Amateurs. Church went on to win 3-0 follow a Jordan Coduri hat trick.

Brett (Big ‘un) Lovelll, Tom (TB) Brennan, James (Jammy) Young and Ryan (Jono) Johnson worked their socks off dealing with ‘big units’ and nippy attackers alike.

Church had the 5th best defence conceding 49 goals, 10 more than Worksop and 18 more than Maltby Main. with 10 clean sheets in the season.

Appearances & player stats

Highest appearances - Ash Ellis had 37 appearances and four goals. He must have a large number of assists and nearly caused a riot when he slipped on the astroturf on the touch line and the ref gave a free kick!

Fewest starting appearances (at least 1) - Andy Brooke made a single appearance at Albion Sport. Making a couple of really important saves and nearly deafening the small crowd with his constant chiding of the defence to ensure he was able to keep a clean sheet. PCFC went on to win 1-0 with a late Kieran Ryan goal.

Special mentions -

Danny Howse - made a dynamic impact in midfield, winning the ball on numerous occasions and closing down players snuffing out attacks. The team seemed to have more confoidnece when hewas doing his ‘Thing’

Andy Ring astounded us with his ability to win the ball in the air, hold the ball and find a player. His goals were always ones that changed a game.

Tom Cadzow came back from injury 3(?) times to help out in defence and to link up elegantly with the midfield.
