Hemsworth were at the lower end of the NCEL Premier Division at the end of last season. Church have a great recent history at Hemsworth, so it was a chance for both sides to meet again on the modern 3G pitch.

Church started confidently and had the better of the early exchanges. However, Hemsworth had the first real opening, created by some swift passing. The low shot from 12 yards went narrowly wide  to the right.

Goal 15 minutes.

A first time cross from Jammy picked out Reece High on the penalty spot. He swayed round the defender and beat the keeper low to the centre of the goal.

The game flowed from end  to end with some excellent football from both sides. Nathan Keightley drew a good save from a 4 yard drive at the near post. Church then cleared their lines with two last-ditch clearances.

The match was finely balanced for the remainder of a very lively and entertaining first half.

Church were pressing hard at the beginning of the second half and Jordan Coduri nearly broke through with a mazy run. The keeper saved bravely at Coduri's feet. Church again looked good going forward with 3 reasonable chances that they did not convert.

After an hour Ashley Ellis was replaced by Elliot Firth in a straight midfield swap.

Hemsworth moved the ball well and found some space in their own half. However, the Church defence held them at bay as soon as the ball came into the Church half.

Goal 71 minutes.

A spell of pressure down the right saw the Hemsworth defender play the ball from very deep in the box. Elliot Firth collected the ball and got a shot off, the keeper fumbled and Nathan Keightley tapped one home from 4 yards.

Goal 77 minutes

Hemsworth found space down the right and a low shot ricocheted around, bouncing in off the startled Nash Connolly.

With some welcome rain teeming down the match opened right up with action in both boxes.

With 3 minutes to go Hemsworth went close with a curling cross that was headed just wide at the far post.

Church managed the last few minutes perfectly to keep Hemsworth out.

A thoroughly enjoyable game ended with another 3 points for Church. Hemsworth were a good footballing team and found great attacking angles.

Church were clinical with their finishing and on balance deservedly won. The Church players and supporters were delighted with the win. In contrast the Hemsworth supporters were fairly grumpy about a home defeat despite their team playing some lovely football.
