Eckington Belles 2–2 Penistone Church Women U12
Penistone Church Women U12 recorded their first draw of the season in their 18th game, sharing the points in a 2–2 contest away at Eckington Belles. On reflection, a draw was probably a fair result, though Penistone may feel it was a missed opportunity to strengthen their grip on third place against a side near the bottom of the table.
Eckington, however, proved far from easy opposition. Coming into the match on the back of two consecutive wins, they played with confidence and energy—and it was the hosts who struck first. A defensive mix-up allowed Eckington to capitalise, and a composed finish gave them an early lead.
Penistone responded quickly. A long goal kick from Olivia caused problems for the Eckington defence, bouncing beyond the back line. Gracie reacted fastest, racing through and finishing neatly to bring the visitors level.
The blustery spring conditions made for a difficult game for both sides. The swirling wind on the slope meant passes often travelled too far or held up awkwardly, making it challenging for midfielders and defenders to control the ball.
Eckington regained the lead in unusual fashion, as a looping cross caught in the wind and drifted all the way into the top corner. But once again, Penistone showed resilience. Shortly after, a goalmouth scramble fell kindly to Maggie, who made no mistake in firing home the equaliser.
Defensively, Heidi delivered an outstanding performance to earn Girl of the Game. She made a series of crucial blocks and tackles, showing great versatility by covering the wing before moving into centre-back following Isla’s injury.
While it may not have been the most fluid game, Penistone’s determination and fighting spirit were clear throughout. In their debut season in Division 2, they are guaranteed at least a fourth-place finish. Currently sitting third, they will be aiming to cement—or even improve—that position in the coming weeks, with a trip to Millmoor followed by a key clash against fourth-placed Langwith.
