Match Report:

Staveley Miners Welfare 1–6 Penistone Church Women’s U12

Despite the lunchtime kick-off, it wasn’t hunger for food driving the growing confidence of the girls as they continue their charge up the league table – it was a hunger for goals.

Penistone started the match at a blistering pace, racing into a three-goal lead within the opening 10 minutes. The girls showed no signs of slowing down either, continuing to press and create chances. By half-time, Penistone had registered five goals in what was a fantastic team performance.

Last season, Staveley had the upper hand, beating Penistone twice – once in the league and once in the cup – with the other meeting ending in a thrilling 3–3 draw. This season, however, Penistone have turned things around and completed the double over their opponents. The progress of this group of girls has been phenomenal.

Every player deserves huge credit. Whether they’re putting in crunching tackles, making important saves, creating assists, earning Girl of the Game honours – like Angel today – or finding the back of the net, the whole squad shows a brilliant community spirit and teamwork.

The goals today came from hat-trick hero Liz, Rohan with her first of the season, plus strikes from Gracie and Evie. Each goal was the result of hard work, great teamwork, and well-played football to create and finish the chances.

Next up is a home fixture against Kiverton, who defeated Penistone 2–1 earlier in the season. But given the team’s wonderful progress and determination, Penistone certainly can’t be written off as the fight for third place heats up with the season drawing to a close.

Well done, ladies – onward and upwards.
