FULL TIME: Penistone Church Women 1–0 Dearne Ladies
A well deserved 3 points in yesterday’s crunch fixture vs Dearne & District.
The squad delivered a professional performance, taking the lead after a fantastic press from Cooke and Stead lead to a Dearne fumble, quickly snatched up by Sammon and passed through on goal to Leason-Hurley who showed no mercy in making it 1-0.
⭐️ PoM went to Beth Ayrton who had another class game for the Church. As usual, she brought her composure, experience and confidence to the team to smother any goal-scoring threats and dominate the game.

A tough afternoon on the road for Dearne Ladies, who fell to a narrow 1–0 defeat despite a battling performance throughout.
The game started scrappy, with both sides struggling to find rhythm. Much of the play was congested in midfield, with limited chances at either end. Dearne looked to use the wide areas early on, but a lack of composure and quality in the final third meant clear opportunities were hard to come by.
Penistone took the lead midway through the first half following a turnover in midfield. A quick break and well-timed run saw their striker go through one-on-one and finish low into the corner. It was a goal that ultimately came from a Dearne mistake — something that proved costly on the day.
Dearne responded with more urgency and showed flashes of promise, including a strong move just before half-time that perhaps deserved more, but the final effort lacked the power to really test the keeper.
The second half started brighter, with Dearne more aggressive and purposeful, particularly down the wings. There were signs of better football, including spells where passes were finally being strung together and pressure began to build.
However, the same issues remained — good build-up often undone by simple errors, misplaced passes, or a lack of awareness in key moments. Balls over the top showed the right intent but lacked the pace or timing to truly threaten, and too often promising situations broke down at the final hurdle.
Penistone, to their credit, stayed organised and solid at the back throughout, and always looked dangerous on the break — with several offside calls preventing what could have been further clear chances.
As the game wore on, Dearne continued to push and matched Penistone for effort, but began to tire in the closing stages. Despite late pressure and a few half-chances, including set-piece opportunities, they were unable to find the equaliser.
Penistone had the better of the final moments and could arguably have added a second, but it finished 1–0 — a close game where the difference ultimately came down to taking a chance and avoiding costly mistakes.
