Match Report
Barnsley Women 0–1 Penistone Church Women U12
Penistone Church Women U12 got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Barnsley in a closely contested encounter.
Both teams played the game in great spirit, showing plenty of quality on the ball along with the heart and determination that even the Lionesses would be proud of. It was a competitive first half, with both sides pushing forward and looking to break the deadlock, but strong defending and determined midfield play kept the score level for much of the half.
Just as it looked like the teams would head into the break goalless, Penistone struck. A quick throw down the left was followed by a lofted cross into a crowded penalty area. The ball dropped kindly for top goalscorer Liz, who made no mistake, calmly striking into the bottom corner to give Penistone a well-earned lead in the closing moments of the half.
Changes at half time added fresh pace and strength to the Penistone side, helping them stay organised and making it difficult for Barnsley to find a way through. Barnsley did come close, sending a shot narrowly over the bar, but Olivia remained composed in goal and fully deserved her clean sheet.
Penistone continued to press in search of a second goal. Captain Anya came close with a powerful drive after making a strong run down the channel, while Liz later turned sharply from a corner before unleashing another strike that was well saved and cleared.
In the end, solid defending and strong teamwork saw Penistone see the game out to secure the win and the clean sheet.
Penistone now look ahead to a trip to Staveley next week before welcoming Kiveton, with both sides battling for a place in third position.
Well done, ladies.
