At The Double today - Will Heath.

Church travelled to Retford FC with 9 first team players unavailable for selection this afternoon, but travel in good spirits they did after a home win and draw with no goals conceded in the last 2 fixtures .

Brett & Jubby had to juggle the squad which saw Eddie Newsome start at right back in place of Septembers POTM and suspended Carlton Pownall. Danny Howes started at left back in place of young George Thompson who was ruled out through injury after some consistent performances. Robert Ludlam also stepped in to partner Harry Viggars at centre half replacing the injured Jack Cawthorn.

Nathan Keightley was deemed fit enough only for the bench, so the front three was made up of Will Heath, Kieran Ryan and Matty Lee, and in the middle of the park we started with Jordan Coduri, Trent Coulter ( both scorers last Saturday) and Lennon O’Grady.

The playing surface was arguably the best we have played on this season and the set up at Retford FC was really welcoming and impressive to say the least.

The game started with a flurry of action, and the home team had the lead in the third minute,, to then be pegged back to 1-1 after a lovely cushioned lob from Will Heath. church got on top and were playing some lovely snappy passing football, and looked really good moving forward.

The home side though took the lead again 2-1, and to compound the disappointment Harry Ambler was retired from the game suffering an arm or shoulder injury. Trent Coulter offered to put the gloves on, and was replaced in midfield by George Ellis, his first team debut.( He went on to have a great game, and will surely get another chance on the back of his performance today). 2 minutes later Harry Viggars hobbled off, to be replaced by our retired player/ now coach James Young at centre half.

The lads went on to equalise again and a great run and early strike by Will Heath got us a second equaliser 2-2.

Again Church pushed forward and came close to a third. The home side then swept down the pitch and got themselves a third on the half time whistle. An exhilarating half and in spite of the unfortunate setbacks, Church could be really happy with their effort and performance.

The second half Church really took the game to the home side and good chances for Will Heath and Danny Howes who rolled back the years as he marauded down the wing hitting a cracking shot against the post, were so unlucky not to convert…. Max Swift and Luke Fretwell got into the action later in the game .

The home side nicked a fourth late on, but Church had been fanstastic and were applauded from the pitch for their efforts.

Their backs were against the wall from the off today with all the changes , but this squad today gave it everything and on another day could have won this fixture…. The club can be very proud of this group today.
