Penistone Church Women can confirm that First Team Manager Mark O’Neill has sadly stepped down from his role after five years in charge.

Mark has been offered an exciting opportunity with Huddersfield Town Women Development Squad, and whilst we’re sorry to see him step away, it’s a move he fully deserves and we wish him every success.

Since forming the team back in March 2020, Mark — alongside Steve Stead, Chris Sammon and Mel Shaw — built the side from nothing into what it is today. Promotions, a league title, a cup final and, more importantly, a strong, committed group with a real identity.

Head of Women’s Football Steve Stead said:

“Without Mark there simply wouldn’t be an open age side at Penistone. The time, effort and commitment he’s put in over the last five years as First Team Manager and 8 years overall involvement with the club has been huge. He might be stepping down, but he’s not disappearing — he’ll always be welcome back.”

Player Caitlin Sammon added:

“It’s thanks to Mark that we’ve built such a strong group, not just as players but as friends. The team spirit we have comes from the standards and belief he’s driven every week. He’ll be massively missed.”

Mark himself said:

“It’s been an honour to manage this group. From that first wet night in 2020 to where we are now, every player has played their part. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built — not just results, but the togetherness and desire within the squad.

I’ve been offered a role at Town which means I can’t give this team the 110% they deserve, and that’s why the time is right. This group will continue to progress — and I’ll be watching with pride.”

Managerial duties will now pass to last season’s Under 18s manager Steve Stead, alongside Chris Sammon, and we look forward to continuing to build on the huge foundations Mark has put in place.

Also worth noting — we’ve struggled to find many photos of Mark on his own… which probably sums him up perfectly. It was always about the players being front and centre.

Mark leaves with the full thanks of everyone at the club and will always be part of Penistone Church.

Up The Church 🖤🤍
