Penistone Church U16 Whites picked up 3 points this remembrance weekend with a solid away performance at Doncaster Belles Greens.

Both teams observed an immaculate minutes silence prior to the game to show their respect for fallen service people from all conflicts.

Penistone started the game brightly and enjoyed a succession of early opportunities. A smart save from the Doncaster keeper kept the scores level before Macy Jones was inches away from converting at the back post following some excellent play down Penistone's right.

The breakthrough finally came when Ella Darrington was felled from behind when through on goal to give the away team a penalty which was duly dispatched by Izzy Lomas. Shortly afterwards Lomas was agreived to see a second goal disallowed for offside.

Having weathered the early storm Doncaster grew into the game with a stubborn rearguard. It was a welcome relief for Penistone when on around the 30 minutes mark Jess Atherton pounced on a loose ball to drive through the Doncaster defence, rounded the keeper and slotted home.

With a 0:2 lead at half time Penistone knew the next goal would be key. But the start of the second half saw Doncaster enjoy their best spell in the game coming close from a corner and drawing an excellent save from Daisy Drury to keep the two goal cushion.

Later in the half the re-introduction of Freya Wright and Gabi Snape brought new impetus to the Penistone attack with Gabi adding the 3rd goal now operating from the left shortly after coming back on.

Despite Penistone having over 20 attempts on goal and enjoying 64% of possession there was a long period in the game where a goal from a hardworking Doncaster team could have changed the outcome of the match.

The result was very much based on the teams ability to keep a clean sheet and the defence of Drury, Bromehead, Sykes, Thompson, Furniss and Fairbank should be commended for their concentration and organisation.

Girls of the game for Church were Niamh Bromehead who had an assured game and Izzy Lomas who was a constant thorn in the oppositions side.

Next week the team are looking forward to an almighty test against the highest ranked team they have ever played when they face Doncaster Belles Reds in the QF of the county cup.
