What a performance the girls put in at the weekend!
Penistone came into the game in a run of in different form and had a long period off from Christmas due to a very wet January/February. The girls started the game well and stuck to their gameplan with Layla stepping in between the sticks. The first half was well contested with Doncaster Belles showing strong threats at corners with some excellent deliveries.
We found ourselves 2 - 0 down due to these excellent corners and us just not having the physicality at times to match our opponents on 2nd balls. At this point Holly came on as a sub and made a huge impact in linking play and we created some close openings. Further excellent work from Nellie and Imogen down the left, supported in midfield by Lil and Hattie meant we made a breakthrough with Elsie scoring an excellent goal. Before half time we drew level with another goal from Elsie with her left foot thundering into the top corner.
We started the second half off in perfect fashion with Elsie and Mia linking well across the box and Holly adding the finishing touch to lead the game 3-2. I did ask the ref how long was left and unfortunately there was another 39 minutes! :)
Both teams kept going at it in a well balanced contest and with the entire defence having an excellent games, with tiredness levels just creeping in Doncaster Belles managed to turn the tide.
That's now the standard we need to aim to meet in every game and can't wait for the next one!
