Nether Green Gold U13s vs Penistone Church Ladies Blacks U13s

On the road again this week for our U13 Blacks as we travelled to face Division 3 Shield semi-finalists Nether Green Gold. Thankfully the rain managed to hold off long enough for the teams to finally get out on the grass on what was a pleasant but cold morning, although the pitch itself was bobbly and claggy in places.

The first half was fairly even with both sides struggling to create clear chances and finding it difficult to get the ball down and play on the uneven surface. Harriet had little to do in the Penistone net and, while our forwards were getting into promising areas, their efforts were either straight at the keeper or off target.

The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes following a good move down the left from Nether Green. With Church unable to stop the ball being played across goal, a high finish into the roof of the net left Harriet with no chance.

The next big chance fell to Church as Libby created space for herself, breaking through the Nether Green defence, only to see her effort well saved by the goalkeeper.

Half-time: Nether Green Gold 1 – 0 Penistone Church Ladies Blacks

The second half saw Nether Green begin to turn the screw and apply more pressure. Their long throws caused plenty of problems, although for the most part the Church defence dealt with them well.

It was only ten minutes into the half when the hosts doubled their advantage. A long ball into the box wasn’t dealt with and left their centre forward with a simple close-range finish.

With legs beginning to tire and little else being created at the other end, Nether Green finished the day with a third goal to seal the result.

On another day the scoreline may have looked very different, but it felt like we conceded from every chance they created while being unable to take the few opportunities that came our way.

We go again.

Good luck to Andrew and the Nether Green Golds in this year’s Shield Semi Final.

Coaches’ Girl of the Game

Ruby – Never gave up and put in a great performance at left back. Determined to win the ball, she defended strongly and played some neat football when in possession.2

Parents’ Girl of the Game

Liv H – Really growing into her role at right back, making it two weeks in a row as Girl of the Game from the parents. Her sheer pace and determination meant she kept Nether Green’s left winger at bay for most of the match.
