Penistone Church Women U12 3–1 Frickley Athletic U12
An almost like-for-like contest unfolded today as Penistone Church Women U12s produced a strong team performance to secure a 3–1 victory over Frickley Athletic in a competitive encounter.
Penistone made the perfect start, striking early in the game through Gracie, who marked her return to the side in style following a short absence. A dangerous ball into the box caused panic for the Frickley defence, and as the goalkeeper scrambled desperately to keep it from crossing the line, Gracie reacted quickest to poke it home and give her side the lead.
Both teams moved the ball well throughout, creating chances at either end in an evenly matched first half. It was Penistone’s leading goalscorer, Liz, who once again demonstrated her trademark finish in the second half. Picking up the ball in her own half, she drove directly at goal with determination and composure, finishing neatly to double the advantage and put Penistone two goals to the good.
Frickley responded with determination, and a scramble inside the penalty area led to a coming together between two players. The referee pointed to the spot, and the resulting penalty was powerfully converted to reduce the deficit to 2–1.
With ten minutes remaining, both sides exchanged attacking spells in an end-to-end period of play. Penistone, however, found the decisive moment. A long throw into the box was brilliantly held up by Maggie, who turned sharply and finished confidently to seal all three points.
Girl of the Game was awarded to Anya, who delivered an outstanding all-round performance — instrumental in setting up attacks and consistently breaking down Frickley’s advances with tireless work and composure.
A wonderful team effort from start to finish and a well-earned victory to take into next week’s big test against table-toppers Handsworth.
