PCWFC 2-5 WORKSOP SJR

⚽🖤🤍 FULL TIME | Penistone Church Women 2–5 SJR Worksop Community
A spirited performance from Church against the league’s form side, but defensive frailties at set pieces ultimately proved costly.
Worksop arrived at the Memorial Ground with a 100% league record, having conceded just one goal all season. We knew it would be a tough afternoon, but Church certainly gave the visitors plenty to think about.
The game got off to a frantic start, with Worksop taking an early lead from a corner before Caitlin Sammon produced a moment of absolute magic, unleashing a stunning strike from 25 yards to bring Church level. A genuine contender for goal of the season! 🚀
Unfortunately, the celebrations were short-lived, with Worksop restoring their lead within two minutes of the restart. Three goals inside the opening eight minutes set the tone for an entertaining contest.
Worksop extended their advantage with another goal from a corner, taking a 3–1 lead into half-time.
Church came out determined to get themselves back into the contest, and Kirsty Downing gave us renewed hope with a long-range effort that bounced awkwardly and caught the Worksop goalkeeper off guard.
At 3–2, the game was very much alive, and Church pushed forward in search of an equaliser, creating some good opportunities and playing some excellent football.
However, it was another corner that proved our undoing, with Worksop restoring their two-goal advantage before adding a fifth on the counterattack as Church committed players forward in search of a way back.
Full-time: 2–5
Despite the scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take from the afternoon. Our general play was excellent at times, we created a number of good chances, and we gave Worksop arguably their toughest league test of the season so far.
But credit where it’s due. Worksop were the better side on the day and deserved their three points. We wish them well for the rest of the season.
🌟 PLAYER OF THE MATCH – KIRSTY DOWNING 🌟
An outstanding performance from Kirsty, who anchored the Church midfield superbly throughout. Tireless in her work, strong in the tackle and composed on the ball, she capped an excellent individual display with a well-taken goal from distance.
👏 A WORD FROM THE MANAGER
Manager Steve Stead was quick to take responsibility for the defeat:
“I thought our outfield play was excellent today, and we caused a very good Worksop side plenty of problems. But ultimately, we’ve conceded three goals from corners, and you simply can’t afford to do that against good opposition.
That’s down to me. We haven’t spent enough time preparing and organising ourselves defensively at set pieces, and as manager I have to take responsibility for that.
There were lots of positives, though. We created some really good chances, scored two excellent goals and competed well against a side who have won every league game they’ve played. There’s plenty we can take forward.”
NEXT UP – SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY LADIES RESERVES (AWAY) ⚽
Another challenging fixture awaits next Sunday, but we’ll go there with confidence, looking to build on the positives from today.
And as always, we’ll be going there looking for all three points! 💪
The future’s bright. The future’s black and white! 🖤🤍
